I say use one like professional trainers use. I use a snaffle from John Lyons I bought at TSC years ago. I love it. I actually have 2 for both my horses and love them. Only thing I use. I also recomend Clinton Anderson Snaffles or ones like them you can look or order at www.clintonanderson.net
