I would try some sort of snaffle bit and see how he/she goes in that. Then you can move up the ranks depending what you would like to see out of the horse. A Tom Thumb snaffle is a good mild western snaffle bit with a bit of a shank for more brakes. Try out one of those and see how he/she does, and if you need something else, do some research to find a bit that will help with the issues that you are looking to help. If you just do trail riding, I would think one of these bits would be fine. A lot of people ride in curb bits also, the kind that you get at fleet farm, but I personally think people should know what they are doing if they use those because those can be harsh. http://www.westernsaddlesforsale.net
