I have recently aquired an older western saddle that is marked with Welshs Saddlery of Edmonton Alberta. I have been trying to find more information on the brand and how old this saddle may be. I've searched the interent and found nothing that helps me. Does anyone know more?

As far as I know, Welsh did not make saddles. Often times stores would ask the manufacturer to withhold their name and the store would add their's. Manufacturers were happy to do this with saddles with minor flaws that didn't effect performance. Can you post a few pics?

I was led to believe they did make their own saddles at their north location in Edmonton. Talking to a Scott that was at the store it sounded like they sold a lot of their own made saddles, especially to team penners. I know they had a lot of equipment in a room back by the washrooms and did a lot of leather work and saddle repairs there. With the new owners now they have expanded the clothing line into that area.

Welsh's was an old company and many did saddlework but it was also advantageous to bring in saddles from the US when US wages were much lower than Cdn. Western Rawhide in Wpg used to make their own saddles. I remember when a slew of leather workers were laid off as it was no longer financially viable to keep them on.
