Kids Buddy Saddle

My parents bought my son a buddy saddle so that he could go riding with us. He is almost 4 years old so he doesn't fit in front of me in the saddle anymore. Has anyone used one of these?

We put it on my FILs horse to try it out but he had saddle bags on and he and the hubby didn't get it put on straight so it leaned to one side. However, my son seemed to feel very secure in it and was much happier riding behind me than trying to squish in front of me.

FIL did say it looked like "a train wreck waiting to happen" and he wouldn't put it on most horses. All of our horses have had riders sit behind the saddle and have packed heavy loads behind the saddle so I'm not sure what his issue is. I think it's just that back in the good 'ol days you rode in front of your mom or dad til you were too big then you were on your own horse. Which would be great but my son is still pretty timid about riding and isn't ready to be on his own.

So thoughts all around??

I used them for trail riding last year with 4-year olds. They've since decided they'd rather try riding on their own, so we haven't used them this year. They worked well, slid around a bit if not tightened well enough, but the horses seemed fine with them.

We would only be using them for trail riding at a walk. Thanks for the reply. I think it's a toss up on having them behind you or having the saddle horn in their belly. I'm hoping that the buddy seat will help him enjoy and be comfortable while riding so he will gain the confidence to ride on his own.

Wouldn't covered stirrups be a good idea for these buddy seats? Maybe some have them...I don't know. I would be concerned about little feet if the horse were to spook or jump.

One of the girls at the barn has one for her kids, looks pretty comfortable to me! None of the horses have issues with it since the kids are so small. Hers is easy to tighten up while riding too & sometimes it looks like they're sitting off balance but the kids don't seem to care. We've gone faster than a walk with them & its been fine.

It almost looks too secure for me. Unless he's also taking lessons on his own and forced to figure out his own balance point, then this saddle will teach him to become reliant on it for support. Take it away, and he will feel insecure and won't be able to support himself properly. I wouldn't mind using it on a kid for a trail ride or something when you can't devote your full attention on him, but I would also make sure that he is learning to ride in a regular saddle once in awhile with you walking close by as his security aid.

^ that's a very good point. The saddle does wrap around them to hold them in place. So they have to do virtually nothing to hold themselves.

He does ride alone being led around the arena or the pasture but he's not ready to be alone on trail rides yet. At 3 years old I am more worried about him enjoying a trail ride and being secure and safe than learning balance in a saddle. If he decides he really enjoys riding we'll go from there. And learning to ride in a regular saddle is a good point. Right now we are just trying to introduce it in a fun and safe way.

That makes sense... basically along the lines of what I was thinking. Teach him proper riding while solo in the arena, and make sure he's secure and enjoying himself on trail rides :)

I've seen them used on trail rides. As long as the horse is a good mount, doesn't bolt or spook, it should be fine.
