Knee Rolls = ? Anyone Understand this?

So a few weeks ago I got myself a used english saddle off of Ebay (it wasn't used for a while) and rode in it and it fit great! But the knee rolls are hard.
When I press it with my fingers it makes a weird crunching
Sound like something is breaking inside. It sounds like stepping on half crushed ice. One knee roll is already half crushed the stuff inside it sunk to the bottom of the knee roll pouch. This is really confusing me. Does anyone understand this? Should I get the knee rolls replaced? Please answer

The knee rolls often have a thin layer of foam inside. It sounds like that foam has oxidized and become brittle. It is crumbling. It is still usable, it just won't be as "cushy".
