Thanks for the input, everyone! Now I'm quite sure I'll get myself an S hack. It's a shame they're not popular at all in the tack shops around here, so I'll have to order one via internet - does this one looks okay to you? - ZILCO S HACKAMORE | eBay

Personally I prefer the rope band like the Reinsman SS. You can always wrap with a bit of vet wrap until the rope softens.
