Making a "neck" rope, what kind to use?

My young mare sometimes just needs a bit of contact before free longing to keep her attention on me, as she is the equine personification of ADD. All she needs is a little bit of a touch to prevent her from running into the fence while looking at a squirrel or bird or plane. I've taken to tying a large loop in a cotton longe line and slipping it do it rests around her neck like this:



Well it's not already around the horse's neck, but you get the idea. She has been getting better with this technique, but the longe line is really bulky and awkward to handle for that use. There may be a technical word for what I'm trying to describe, if there is, let me know! I just kind of improvised it one day.

Anyone have an idea of a better kind of rope to use? Or should I just stick it out with the longe line? Thanks!

Why don't you lunge her on the line and then remove?

She has problems listening without a halter involved. When we first started working, if she didn't have on a halter, I wasn't the "boss of her" basically. I've been using this to help break her of that mindset, and it's been working really well.
