Default Making vienna/running reins

Just wondering if anyone has ever made their own vienna/running reins. The cheapest I can find them (a quality pair) for is about $40.00. It's not a bad price, but I think I could make some out of rope, or something similar, for much cheaper.

How would you make them adjustable (short of tying them onto the surcingle)? I'd definitely put snaps on one end, although I'd like them on both ends. Although I don't know how to make it so they're adjustable with snaps on both ends. If that makes sense...

I'm interested in the suggestions you may get. I asked a similar question a few months ago and never got an answer. =( Maybe you'll have better luck. *crosses fingers*

Just an idea. If you had a thickish or flattish rope you could measure holes on the rope behind the clip, then you could loop through where you are attaching the rope to and clip it back onto itself in the holes you made.

I've never made it, but short of a buckle (which makes it more difficult and breakable) this is the simplest option that I can think of.
