Making your own saddle pad/blanket..?

I recently came across the idea of making your own saddle pad/blanket out of wool roving and burlap. My great-grandma actually suggested it and even dug out one from her childhood. I looked to be in great shape and because wool naturally binds, it looked a lot like a regular felted wool pad and was more solid than a saddle blanket, but not quite so solid as a wool saddle pad.

I found a tutorial here.. Tutorial - Latch Hooking a Wool Saddle Pad But I was just wondering if anyone else has done this or used a saddle pad made this way? The long MN winters might leave some pretty good time to work on this, but I just wanted to be sure it will be worth that time.
