    I guess I'm pretty biased as a polo player... but I think as long as a martingale fits correctly, it's better to use one and rather to be safe than sorry. Too many friends with broken noses, I guess.

    They may be useful for a short period of time or on and off again. But they don't, as others have said, substitute real training. And you also must realize, if you use a martingale for your dressage or your jumpers and then you go to show it's illegal to use these, so if you become dependent on using them you're not going to do well at a show because you don't have your helping tool.
