Measuring English Reins

Okay, this has been bugging me for the longest.

I know that English reins are standard 54".

So, is this from end to end or end to the buckle in the middle?

I have a pair of reins that, from end to buckle, are 42". Obviously they are 84" from end to end.

They are WAY too short on Sunny. I have to lean so far forward with those reins that I look like the Hunchback of Notre Dame.

So, I'm on the lookout for some longer ones, but I'm not quite sure how they are typically measured.

Thanks for any input!

It sounds like you have a set of pony length reins.

The answer to your question is kind of logical if you think about it.

Standard reins are 54". Your reins are 42" from bit to mid buckle. If standard reins were not measured like you measured yours then they were be REALLY short from bit to buckle (27", only slightly over 2').

54" is 4'-6" if that gives you a better idea.

So it's measured from bit end to buckle, you think?

It's funny, because I had a 1/2 Arab mare and I used the same reins with her and they were actually nearly too long.

I guess she had a shorter neck than I realized!

ETA: Just saw the rest of your post. Thanks!

Shorter neck that was held more upright could be the difference.
