Angry Mule Bit!?! (rant)

So there is this lady at my stable that rides an older saddlebred around the age of 20. This horse is a super nice ride and can be ridden in a plain snaffle but just suddenly this lady switched the horses bit and replaced the snaffle with a mule bit!! She showed me the bit a couple of days ago and she was so proud of buying one. She told me the horse pulled her around a lot and wouldn't stop trotting and didn't respnd at all to the O-ring snaffle or twisted snaffle.( I rode this horse a few times and never had any problems with him.) Thats why she is switching to the mule bit. I just wanted to tell this lady off but it is her horse... I did tell my trainer though and I hope she will talk to the lady.
It just gets me so mad when people think that switching to a harsher bit will solve all their problems! Most of the time it is the rider's fault when a horse does something undesirable. Even if the horse was doing something like rearing to be rude, the rider should be able to train the horse not to do that such bad thing.Sorry for the rant

Also what are everyone's opinions on the mule bit?

To those that don't know what the mule bit looks like:

Those things are barbaric. That woman should be beat over the head with the bit. Sometimes you just can't fix stupid. I feel bad for the horse.

Spent a whole hour today laying in a pasture, waiting for a sparkling vampire to show up. Alas, I woke up and looked over, only to find a mound of horse crap. Sigh.

Some horses do need a harsher bit, but to jump from a snaffle to a mule bit? To go from ANYTHING to a mule bit?
If she knew how to use it, and if the horse actually needed it, then maybe something other than a snaffle but... no, just... no.

That's insane. I have seen these bits on the tacky tack blog and FHOTD, and always am appalled. What would possess somebody to put that in their horses mouth?

YIKES! It's riders like these that just need a few lessons or to read up on riding (particularly dressage, but I'm probably biased) instead of buying harsher equipment. It isn't fair to the horse to make his job harder because you aren't stepping up to the plate and doing your job as the rider. A harsh bit with a bad rider is just going to get you an angry horse.

I have heard of those but never seen one in person or pictures. That's pretty intense looking, what would make a person even consider putting that in their horses mouth for even a second!?

I wonder the same thing Squeek! There is no reason for this rough bit. The horse is a perfect ride cause I have personally rode him myself. The lady I believe just doesn't have a clue how to ride a horse.
