So, I was on my way to feed for my friend this morning and I passed a yard sale. I saw a couple of saddles sitting out front, so I decided that if I had time before work, that I would stop by to see what they had. Well, I had about ten minutes to spare before work, so I zoomed in. Sooooo glad I did!! They had a couple of gorgeous saddles, but I didn't have that much money. Then I was browsing some of the other stuff and came across this dusty leather halter. The guy took a rag and wiped it down...and it was a big leather show halter with silver and a matching lead laying a couple of feet away! So, I asked him how much he wanted for it, thinking it was going to be some ridiculous amount and he said that he'd told someone $35 earlier, for just the halter, but they hadn't come back. So, I thought for a minute (did some mental math) and then said "If you throw in the lead, I'll give you $40 right now." SOLD!!
It needs to be oiled badly, and the silver needs to be cleaned, as does the chain part of the lead. It looked big enough to fit Aires, but I figured if it didn't, I could always resell it for A LOT more than I paid for it.
Anyway, it fits Aires perfectly
on the biggest settings. lol I was surprised that it adjusts on both sides of the nose, along the bottom of the throat (between the noseband and throatlatch...the chin, I guess?), and on both sides of the head.
So, here it is. I haven't cleaned it up yet or oiled it.
And on the boy (crappy cell phone pic, but I forgot my camera this morning):
So, on to my questions...
1) I know I can use my Skidmore's leather cream on the leather parts. What can I use to clean the silver/hardware? Anything special?
2) I'll try to get better pics on Monday, but does it look like it fits him okay? It's not tight, exactly, but it's not overly loose.
3) The chain part of the lead is really rusted. Do you think I could just use like an SOS pad to clean that up?
4) This halter seems more like a western-style halter and Aires is definitely not a stock-type horse...do you think it'd be okay to use for English halter classes?
