Lightbulb Need help- matieral for rope halter?

Hi everyone!
I found this link about making rope halters though this site, and i'd really like to make a few for myself!

Wellll the only problem is, I don't know what you would call the material. Or where you could buy it lol!

Its that sort of nylon rope... I don't know the exact name. Does anyone know what its called? Or where I can buy it? I live in south eastern pennsylvania, if that is any help to you lol.

Thanks so much guys!

I actually just made a rope halter myself! =) One of the sites I looked at called the stuff 1/4 inch double braided nylon rope. I found the rope I got at a farm supply store. I had to look quite hard for it and I finally found it in a dark aisle near one corner of the store, but it was there! I think they called it 1/4 inch nylon rope but it's basically the same. And it was $9 for 50 feet! It was amazing. I dyed mine using RIT dye becuase I wanted it to be a pretty shade of green and that worked really well too. The rope shrank a lot in the dying process though. =( Good luck!

You can make a rope halter out of about any kind of rope you want to.. If you are referring to the type that many Natural horsemanship trainers use and recommend I believe it is called Yacht Braid and it is a marine rope.. So check out the local boating store. ;)

Marine rope, or braided nylon rope work well. If you have a Wal-mart around there, go to the hardware and tool area and they have all kinds of poly and nylon rope. I got about 100 ft of 1/4 inch halter quality poly rope for about $12. They have several colors to choose from too.

Always remember that feeling of looking at a big, open country over the ears of a good horse, seeing a new trail unwind ahead of you, and that ever-spectacular view from the top of the ridge!!! Follow my training blog: http://robertsontraining.blogspot.com/

As a general rule of thumb if you ever want to dye something, always dye the material before you make anything out of it . Same goes with anything else really. Wash the material before you make anything out of it.

That's what I did, but I didn't want to dye the whole 50 feet of rope so I cut it before I dyed it. =P It worked out anyway though because Lacey has a small head so the measurements for for an Arabians head were way too big for her, so the rope shrinking worked out perfectly.

Hey, yes you can use any kind of rope to make a Rope Halter, but not all ropes will give you the same quality product. First I would recommend a Double Braid Marine Yacht Rope. Double Braid means that it has a outside cover over an inside core which makes a very Strong rope. Second consider the material of the rope; Nylon can have a soft or firm feel & comes in many fun colors. Polyester is the BEST Quality available as it has many advantages over Nylon. Polyester has an excellent Abrasion quality(does not snag), it is resistant to UV sunlight, mold & mildew, maintains its strength wet or dry, low stretch and feel soft and pliable at all times. Natural Horsemanship usually use the Polyester Double Braid. The only drawback to Polyester is that it only comes in limited colors.
Third is that not all Halters are equal! Where the knots are located can have a big impact on your horses pressure points and response to the rope halter. Sizing matters it should not be too big or too tight or you will lose the advantages that rope halters provide.
