New saddle fit with link to see pictures

    Hey guys,

I just borrowed this saddle from a store and they let me try it. I rode in it for an hour, walk, trot, canter and my mare seemed happy or it didn't bother her. She sweat a but, no signs of dry spots or anything wrong, all the hair was flat so no signs of rubbing either, looked good.

I have taken many pictures of the saddle without a pad on my horse and I would be interested in having everyone's thoughts on this please :)

Im not exactly sure if it's too wide or what... The saddle maker is Western Rawhide and it has a 6 3/4'' gullet width and a 7 3/4'' high gullet with quarter horse bars.

Here is the link to see the pictures:

Please feel free to write what you think and any suggestions, im free to all opinions, the saddle was only borrowed, it ain't mine :)

Would really like to know if this could be a good fit or not before buying :)

I'm no saddle fit expert, but my first thought was that it seemed a bit wide. I'm still learning about saddle fit though, so I'm interested to know what others think.

It looks like it is not only too wide but the angle is off. It seems tighter on her at the top than at the bottom. Part of that could be a new saddle with stiff leather but the angle looks off to me. Hard to tell only from pictures but it looks wide near the back too. How does it fit with a pad on? Are the angles on here shoulders better? That is the part that concerns me the most.

Yes the angle of the bars looked much better with a pad on for sure, I should have taken pics with the pad on, I just didn't think at the time....

I am glad that Les posted. I could not figure out how to describe what seemed off, but he has done that. The angle of the bars will not be improved with a pad under the saddle.
Is that saddle your only choice?

In taking another look I really think that the angle is wrong for this horse. Padding will not improve that and I think you are going to get some serious pinching near the top of her withers, especially when your weight is in saddle. It is hard to judge this only from pictures and you really need to see the saddle in person to make these judgements but you can take a stiff wire and form it to her withers and center of her back. Lay the two pieces of wire on a piece of cardboard and trace it. Then cut out the outside of the tracing so you could stick it underneath a saddle and get an idea of how it would lay on her back. The bars of the saddle should make full even contact along the entire surface of the template. You can take this to the saddle shop with you to find one that has the right width and angle.

Once you have your saddle with the correctly shaped tree I like a 100% wool felt pad that will conform and shape to the horse back as you ride as the wool will get wet and hot with sweat and friction and shape (refelt) to the horses back, helping to fill in or make room for any irregular spots. The bar angle is so important as the horse will muscle up or drop muscle / fat as the year goes along but the angle of their shoulder will never change. Good luck and let us know how you make out.

Thank you so much Lesandlily, I will consider taking her shape with a wire and then trace it down :) I am going to get a 5 star pad that's for sure, i've made my research and that's the one I want, no more fleece or neoprene anything, just wool! ;)

And I knew the angles looked weird from the beginning but I just wanted to have other opinions to make sure. I will certainly not buy this saddle.
