Old Mac hoof boots

I have finally decided to get some hoof boots for trail riding. I am looking at the Old Mac G2. Does anyone use these and if you have some, do they have spikes inside that go into the hoof? I have only seen pictures of them so far, we don't have a dealer close. I have heard that some brands have metal thingys inside that kind of dig into the hoof to keep them on. I don't want that

The ones with the spikes are "easyboots". Old macs do not have any metal inside, to my knowledge.. A good friend of mine has the G2's and is happy with them. I have tried and bought the Boas made by easycare.. I like them a lot. I also have a pair of Cavallo Simple boots which I love but they are too large and slip around too much. I think their sizings are a bit off.. I also have the old fashioned easyboots, they are ok, but I don't recommend them. The epics and bares have gaitors to help keep them on so they are ok. You can tamp down and/or cover the spikes in the easyboots but, why bother with so many others available. :)

Holler if you want any other advice on boots.

Thanks appy, We have been having some spousal "conversations" on wether to shoe or boot for when we go to the places that recommend shoes. I finally decided to try the boot and hubby agreed  Since you are in SE Kansas, is there anyplace that carries them? We are near Winfield.

Vida, are there any tack stores close by? They should of have it.. All stores in my area carry old macs and simply boot. However prices are different. :)

Let us know the experience - I'll have to buy something next year too...

We have several stores that sell tack, not sure if I would call them "tack stores" More like feed/farm stores. I have never seen boots in any of them. I think I am going to order online. we are on our way out to measure feet right now. I'll be sure to post after we try them out.

I see... By tack store I mean they sell mostly tack and barn supply, not feed (not counting the treats). Be sure to trim horses before taking the measurements (that's what I know for sure)!

Well, thats that. They can't fit either of the girls since they have such weird shaped feet. I called easycare easyboot and we looked at all the boots they make. None of them would fit them. They suggested I look into custom boots but I checked the price on some and they run about $300-400 for just the front feet. Guess I will go with hubbys plan to just shoe them next time we go to a "rocky" place. Thanks for all the input.

Not that I am aware of. I have seen the Easyboots in some shops. You might try Mitchels?sp in Wichita/derby i think has one also. I'd call around. I just ordered my Boas online from KV Vet as they had the best price.. Online catalogs, I'd check country supply, valley vet, kv vet, the cavallo site for simple boots, ebay, that's all i can think of right now. HEY, I have a great trimmer who is in Wichita. She can fit boots for you.. I think she carries the easy boot epics right now.. She's hoping to stock some different boots as well. They aren't cheap tho.. If you want her contact info go to her site. She is very good.. I highly recommend her trims and she isn't too $$$ either. http://www.barefoothooves.net/index.html

Otherwise, measure the hooves and compare the boots by the chart on this page.

AAAAAAAAAAGGGGGHHHHHHTTTTTTT!!!!!!!!!!

LOL, Do give Amber a shout before you decide to shoe.. She may be able to get those hooves back into good shape so the boots will work. What is the weirdness? on their sizes? Maybe they just need tweaking up with a good trim. ;) I am a barefoot lover.. lol

I have checked several site sizing charts and I can't find any that are different. They are more thatn 2-4 sizes wider than they are long. and every one says if that is the case then boots won't fit. I too am a barefoot advocate and it has been frustrating finding a farrier who won't knife off the sole and frog. Thanks so much for Ambers # I will give her a call today. They just got trimmed Sunday but we may have her out for a consult anyway.

Wow, that's wide. FYI, Cavallo Simple Boots are very round.. Mine are 5 1/2 x 5 1/2 inches. Just a bit too large for my up to 5" max W or L feet. Can you use them? lol

Do give Amber a shout. Tell her AppyT sent ya, I met her on the equisearch forum.. lol

She does not remove sole or frog unless it's a real tatter etc., then only what wants to come off. Perhaps there is flaring that is making them too wide. If you check her site she has an online service which consists of email convo and viewing pics you can send her before you have her out if you wish. Take them asap since they were just trimmed as that will help her know what's going on best via pics.

Here is a shot of my fatround tries to be underrun filly's foot after her last 2 trims. compare if you like.. I think these are both a left front.

I had tweaked her a bit a couple weeks before Amber came back as they were really runnin forward.. Just took another set of pics so Amber could tell me if I need to tweak and where. Lets see how this one stacks up in the run. trim was 2 weeks ago.. both fores..

Vida,

I got Dover's catalog yesterday and looks like boa boots there are same price as Old Mac's (they are much more expensive in my local store somehow). I heard boa are better than old mac's in all ways.

If you will decide on boots after talking to farrier etc., let me know the experience. :)

Thanks Kitten, I will let you know how it goes although it will probably be spring before I get them now. I just winterized the trailer and we will not be venturing far from home till then.

Hey Appyt, Amber is coming to check out the girls tomorrow
YEAH!!!!!!!!!!!! :D

Tell her that heifer Heidi's heels are curling and running under again. Bout that time between trims that she does it.. snort.. Guess I'd better get some fresh pics tomorrow and send them to her. ;)

Glad you are having her come out. I hope you are happy with her work, I sure am..:D
Very Happy

She made it out and did a fine job. Didn't have to do much but the mares were a little crooked. She fit some easy boots on Sassafras and got them to fit fine :? She is bringing out some Cavello's next time so we can try them out. It was so nice to say "natural trim" and not have the farrier just get a funny look on their face. Hubby asked her to put us on her route so he must have liked her too and he is the final word. Thanks again for putting me in touch with her :D

#20 ·
Sure did, you should get a commision  Its great we are on her way to another job in Dexter so she was driving right by our place anyway. I will try to get some pics taken. She just did the mares, the yearlings are still pretty short. We are off to a Chiefs game today YAH :)

I talked to her on IM last night and she said you are nice people. :) Said she just evened them up balance wise and tweaked em as they weren't long. She's happy to have another in that direction. Helps with gas and mileage when she can combine trips. She does that over my way too. I have 5, a couple friends with 2-3 each.. She cleans up over here. LOL I love that she isn't expensive.

Ya gotta love it when you see her get out of her truck. Lil whisp of a thing.. LOL

Hah! I think she got a little offended when I made a comment about her being a "kid". To me anything under 30 is a kid  Yeah I guess we are nice people, my husband more than me.
