Poll gaurds...

In short: which type?

Alli has a tendancy to move her head around a lot in the trailer (I rode with her for a bit -I know, I know... tut tut) and I don't want her freaking and smacking her poll on something and causing her self damage.

I was quite happily going to buy one of these:



But I also saw one of these which have more padding, but surely they only protect the part of the head where the headpiece of the headcollar sits and the headcollar could quite easily slip back...


So, anyone favouring either one? Or is there a happy combo of large surface area coverage and lots of padding, out there somewhere?

I would recommend the first style, since it will be more secure, wont slip back and covers greater area. The second one, aside from the slipping issue, is just so narrow that I would worry if she whacked it hard enough it wouldn't distribute pressure, but aide in brusing/hurting her poll area.

I've used both.

The second is actually more protective of the poll, in most circumstances, due to its height. Better if your horse is likely to rear in a lorry/trailer or throws its head high a lot, IMO.

The first is easier to fit but because it's a lot thinner gives less protection, but over a wider area. Good as more general head protection, I would have thought. We've also used a similar type with front-to-rear padding over the poll between the ears and a baseball cap peak which my wife and daughter thought made the horses look cool ;)
