My saddle pad doesn't come all the way down to my barrel saddle's D-ring. I try really hard not to pull my geldings hair while I wined up the latigo but I do sometimes. If I buy a saddle blanket that is longer than my pad (to go over my pad) will this help with the problem? Or will I just be adding more crap to deal with. I have to use my pad because my horse has muscle astrophy and pad has gel inserts to pad him up.
Sorry I cant see the picture very good but is this an issue all year long, just with this cinch or this time of year when his hair long for winter?
I have that problem during the winter on certain cinches so just have to be mindful, Ill cinch them up and make sure there is no hair caught, walk or ride them around then recheck. It usually seems to happen when everything settles in after first saddling. I had a cinch with a roller buckle(like the Smart Cinch) that was notorious for it.
I was thinking about getting the impact gel barrel pad with the extended sides but then I worry about his muscle atrophy. It took a long time to find a saddle that fit him and this saddle + pad(with muscle gel inserts) seem to be the perfect combination (except for this issue). I just got this saddle a month ago so I'm not sure about it being just a winter issue. Do you think a blanket would help with the problem?
Check out this page, the Sharon Camarillo orthopedic pads with inserts or they have pads for sway backed horses. Not sure where your horse's muscle atrophy is located.
Just my opinion but I really don't like the gel pads.
