Question: Does your saddle reeaaalllly fit???

Oh my gosh thank you for sharing this.
I learn so much and saddle fitting is something I've never fully been able to grasp.
I'd never thought of looking for youtube videos.
I'll defiantly be adding these to my favorites. =)

I stopped using my saddle when I noticed whisks was getting the white hairs on her back from the circulation getting cut off, I was so annoyed with myself for not checking it all before.
Whisks has No withers and she's relatively fat, i'm considering a treeless saddle or just a plain bareback pack? Curious if anyone uses these.

A regular bareback pad will work for Whisks, but it may not work for you if you are not a relatively experienced, balanced rider. Bareback pads are essentially saddle pads with stirrups, they do not provide a whole lot of structure and support. You can take a look at some of them here, BareBack Pad :: Western saddle Horse tack English saddles Pony saddle for sale - SaddleOnline Inc., just to get a general idea of what they are structurally. If you do not have a great seat or are not secure when riding at ALL gaits bareback, you may find yourself feeling a bit less than secure. Also, since she is round, you may find the pad wants to slip.

A treeless saddle is probably a better option because it provides the security of a regular saddle. There is not a huge difference in a how a treeless saddle will feel when you are riding, though it may seem a bit less rigid. Just make sure whatever model you look at buying is relatively balanced to avoid weight distribution problems.

My suggestion is to hire a Professional Saddle Maker/Fitter to come out to your place to assess your horses back and to help you find the right saddle for the both of you.

A good one will come out with a truck/van full of saddles and assess them on your horses back after seeing what type of model, tree, width your horse will need. Then, when he/she finds the right one, they'll have you ride in it to see how it fits you, and to see how your horse responds to the saddle being used in work.

They cost around $100.00+ , IMO well worth it to find the right saddle.

Saddle fitting should be checked much more regularly than that.
Horse shape changes often with diet/work/illness etc.
Every couple months is a more popular, safe choice.

Very informative videos. Thank-you for posting! I'll be looking to get Harry a saddle soon, and I've been wondering for a while now how to tell if a saddle fits a horse. I've heard a lot of things from looking at sweat patterns to just checking two fingers at the top of the withers. This has really been helpful and I'm looking forward to finding a saddle that fits us both!
