Questions about new grazing muzzle

Hello everyone!

The grazing muzzle I ordered for Rocky just arrived. It's "Best Friend Grazing Muzzle". I picked it because it got really good reviews and has a breakaway feature.

Okay, here's the thing. I've never had to use a grazing muzzle before so I was hoping you guys would be able to help me figure out a good schedule for Rocky. Here's his situation. He's on pasture 24/7, with a 1/4 scoop of grain twice a day. He does not get hay. How often do you think I should have the muzzle on him? Should it be all the time, every other day, or what? Any other tips on using the muzzle would be appreciated as well. I didn't want to have to use one on him, but he just gets way to fat too quickly on our rich Michigan grass. thanks =)

anyone? I'm going to introduce the muzzle tomorrow and just try and get him used to it. I figure introducing it slowly and gradually increasing his time in it is the best way

I can't offer advice about the grazing muzzle but I'll be watching the advice you get on here - I think I'm going to need one for my Misty pony, she's getting way too heavy and she's just on pasture right now.

However just out of curiosity - if his weight is a problem why are you still graining him?

we're slowly weaning him off the grain for the summer. He's at a half scoop during the winter. Hopefully in a couple of weeks we'll have him down to just a handful. He has to have something while the other horses are being fed (hes in a field). otherwise, because he's the boss, he'll steal the other horses grain.
