rider saddle fit

I bought my first saddle about 5 years ago. Lately I've had problems keeping my leg back and my seat being too far back on the saddle. I have also noticed that my knees go over the front of the saddle as well. I read somewhere that a good fit meant you could fit your whole hand behind you when you sit.
I'm wondering if perhaps I have grown out of my saddle, since I've recently (within the last year or so) noticed these problems. I do have long legs as well, and have been known to hike my stirrup leathers up while riding some of the smaller horses, as I have been lately. However, I still notice the knee going over the saddle whilst riding with longer stirrups on the taller horses.

I don't actually own any horses, all of the horses in "my barn" are school horses at the barn where I ride.

Sounds like you outgrew it. I've been having problems with that lately, too. I also found out that I have a chair seat, which was making it look like my saddle was too small. Pics would probably help. What saddle is it? What size? How tall are you?

I will have to edit later with pictures, they are still on my Dad's camera and I'm not so sure how to get them.

As for the saddle, it is a collegiate, size 16 or 16.5. I am about 5'6", but mostly leg. I have some old pictures of the horses in "my barn" but they are from 2004 or 05 and jumping, and I wasn't having problems then. :/

First of all, yes I have draw reins on this horse. I understand some people hate them with all their might, but this was not my horse and I was told to use them. Lets please keep this thread on topic, thank you.
(At another forum I was heavily bashed for posting pictures of this horse while jumping to ask about releases, so I am a little cautious...)

These were taken a little before my issues began. My trainer pin pointed them at me having been riding/retraining these ex-western ponies to be english hunter/jumper.
When my dad can help me with his camera, I can post pictures from a couple weeks ago. ;D

oh yes you most definitely need a new saddle. I'd say at least a 17" if not a 17.5"

Lol, thanks to all. Hopefully I can find another saddle like this one in good shape for the kid-in-college price. XD
Time to take a trip to the tack store! <3

My 5'5" daughter rides best in a 17.5" saddle. She has a little more "meat" to her than you do, but about the same length of leg. I would look at 17" saddles to start with, possibly with x-long flaps. Some Dressage lessons to work on getting your leg back might not be a bad idea either .

luvs2ride~ thanks for the advice, my instructor has me doing tons of double posting to help with the leg issues. >.<

So I looked at some saddles today at the closes tack shop; I had only been there once and was not very pleased. However, the other tack shop (which I loved) closed down, and this was the only one I knew of. It isn't much better than I remembered, but they had some good saddles. The person had me looking at close contact since I am hunter/jumper. I tried a 17.5 wide, and she commented that it fit my leg and seat well. Sadly, they only trial a saddle for two days, and I won't be able to ride until monday...so I hope it is still there on saturday/sunday. :/ It was a Legacy saddle with a some wear, but at a decent price.
What type of brands should I be looking for as a hunter/jumper, and any tips on looking at used saddles?

You might only need a full seat size bigger, and definitely need a longer and more forward flap to accomodate your long legs. With a forward flap, you won't have problems with your knees overshooting : )

Most saddles I find have a standard and long flap length option. If you're looking for an affordable close contact, Henri De Rivel PRO Close contact saddles have a forward flap w/ long and xlong flap length options. The saddle itself (even with the shortest flap option available) is meant for a long-legged rider. I couldn't fit in it because I'm short, my knees didn't properly reach the knee pads. Check it out, you can find a great deal on ebay too right now.
