Riding a Pony in Horse-Sized Tack?

A lot of the barrel horses I've been interested in have been ponys and I have tons of HORSE-sized tack! They're all larger ponys (over 13h) and the one I'm looking at currently is actually pretty stocky (although she's trained for barrels). I have two saddle pads that are really nice, but they're also quite large. All my bridles are horse-sized. However, I rode the POA I used this summer in one of Major's old bridles (on the smallest settings) and it worked fine. I also used his show halter on the smallest setting and that fit fine too. Do you think I'll be able to use my horse-sized tack on a tall pony? It would be nice not to have to buy anything, since I've already got everything, but I will if I need too. The one thing I don't have yet is a barrel saddle, can I just get a 15" saddle like I normally ride in or does it need to be smaller on the account of her being a pony? Could the bits be too big and therefore uncomfortable in her mouth?

Well, I would say that it's just about impossible to know until you actually have the new pony in hand. Maybe when you go to look at a new mount, seriously, take along your tack and you can get at least an idea of how much too big the items might be. To me, the saddle would be the biggest issue. Bits aren't that expensive, and that's highly subject to any specific equine, regardless if pony or horse. More breed based than anything, IMO.

I think you just have to try unfortunately.

Thanks, I could take along a bridle and a saddle pad, I suppose. Good idea!

Every horse should have properly fitting tack, especially the saddle. The seat size isn't what you go by, you have to make sure the bars/gullet ect fit the horse properly. (I'm not an expert on saddle fit so you'll have to ask others) With bridles too though, if it fits well and is safe it shouldn't be an issue but if its loose/slipping that could lead to a bad/dangerous situation.

Don't get anything until you have the pony, and can check the fit on her with everything. You'd be surprized how much the behavior of a horse can be determined by ill or proper fitting tack (ill fitting will cause pain, possibly very severe). And you don't want to buy something and hope it fits, then get stuck with it.

Good luck with the new pony! (:

Great advice, thanks! I actually didn't buy hardly any of my tack (Except for a turquoise matching set with a bridle, reins, saddle pad, and breast collar I found for $10 at a rummage sale in town, that I simply couldn't resist since I've always wanted a turquoise saddle pad!) Most of it was given to me in excellent condition so it's not like I have a bunch of money in it or anything. It'd just be nice if the tack I already have is a good, safe, fit.

I know what you mean! When I got my pony I thought the saddle we had from a long time ago, when I was maybe 8, would possibly fit. The thing was almost as long as her back xD
If only it was a one size fits all thing, would be a lot less expensive, but sigh - I guess we can't have everything. Haha. :b

You may be able to get by with some of it, and others you may need to replace. I'd wait on getting new stuff until you have your horse/pony, but don't cry over what you've already got yet. I used to ride a 14.2 AQHA mare in what was mostly horse tack, though for her dainty little head she needed a cob size. I did have to watch how pads fit the length of her back, but it wasn't super hard, and I think pony tack would really have been too small. It's going to be case by case on what fits and what won't.
