I will ride my mare in one if I'm feeling super lazy (I use cheap $5 rope halters at the barn instead of her $150 bronc halter so no one steals them) because she is a finished reiner, very broke, there is no reason for her not to be responsive to anything I put on her.
Some horses just respond better to no bit. Some horses like bits with a lot of gag because of the poll pressure. Others don't because they don't like poll pressure. Some horses like ports because they respond better on the palate, others don't because they don't like the pressure on the palate. Some horses respond to nose pressure, other's don't as well. For me, rope halters aren't legal to compete in and my horses all aren't fans of nose pressure and like softer bits instead which is fine by me. I one had arabs who really liked the nose pressure, but since they couldn't be shown in a halter they got some light little S hackamores.
Personally, it's preference to the horse, not me.
Pssh.I didn't pick up the wrong lead
It's called a counter canter...
...A very advanced maneuver.
