I have a Courts roping saddle for my hanovarian/TB mare. I do things like drag logs, rope and work horses, etc. off this saddle and my mare, Lexi, seems to be okay with the saddle fit (i.e. No white hairs, no dry spots, no bucking). The only thing is that my saddle pad slips back under the saddle a lot and the saddle is a little downhill on Lexi. There is also not quite as much shoulder clearance as I would want there to be. The saddle itself doesn't slip at all whenever I ride Lexi. My saddle fitter also said that the saddle fit was pretty good, but could be improved with a better pad. So, I was wondering if a good quality 1" wool pad would work? Or maybe a 1/2" wool 1/2" foam pad? Or should I get something that can be shimmed?
Another question on shimming; if I were to get a pad designed for shims, would I just use a shim towards the front to make the saddle level?
