saddle fit

I am learning a lot about saddle fit and also feel I will never "get it". How tight/loose should a western saddle feel under the pommel and just below the spine on the back. The barrel saddle I had been using feels very tight under the pommel when I girthed up, even not girthed I felt some pressure or a pressure point. When girthed up I could not even get my hand under the pommel it was so tight. Thanks...

If you can't slide at least 3 fingers (standing up, not flat) between the pommel and your horses withers, then the saddle is too big.
