My sister Christina has a horse we've had a lot of problems with when it comes to fitting for a saddle. He's a Quarter Horse mix, not even 14 hands, and incredibly broad but with pretty bad sway back. Needless to say, he's far from the best built horse out there, but we love him dearly.
Her old saddle was much too small for Blue, so we sold it and have been in the market for a new one, but with the economy as it is, we're on a tight budget - and let's face it: it's hard to find a GOOD saddle for $200 or less. Especially when the horse you're trying to saddle isn't "average" by any means.
So essentially, we're trying to do the best we can with the money we have, but again, saddles don't fit Blue normally, and nobody in the area is really sure what to do with that situation (we certainly don't have any saddle experts around these parts, and most of them ride Western anyway - Christina prefers English).
That being said, we found a saddle in fantastic condition which seems to actually be wide enough for him. However, the size difference between just being saddled and having person IN the saddle is pretty tremendous. I don't know much of what I'm doing with it, and we want to make sure it doesn't hurt him before we actually put the money down for this saddle. It's unlikely to be perfect, but again, we're just looking to do the best we can, and if it won't be of detriment to the horse, we're going to keep it. She doesn't Show with him or take long rides, so that isn't really an issue. I included shots of the back because it seemed to me that it was sitting high, at least unmounted.
If you could take a look at the pictures (three mounted, three unmounted) and let me know what you think about Blue's comfort in this saddle, it would be much appreciated. I know the pics aren't perfect, but it was hard getting them on my phone. I hope they work!
