I'm looking at getting a barrel saddle for Jinxx, but it led me to a question. Where Jinxx is still growing (he is going on 3) will his withers and shoulders become wider? Which makes me wonder if I got a saddle that fits him now when he is grown up will it become too narrow for him?
Here is a picture of him last summer (only conformation shot I have for now, but I can get some more recent ones if need be), so you can get an idea of what his build is like.
Right now I have a tex tan ( 7 inch fqhb) trail saddle that fits him. I also use it with a 7/8 inch saddle pad. I have bad luck with selling saddles, so I want to avoid it as much as possible. Even if he out grows the tex tan saddle I wouldn't sell it since I also use it with my other horse. So it would be best to hold off until he gets older?
I would like to see a pic of the Saddle on your Horse without a pad and lightly cinched. One pic should show a closeup of how the front of the saddle meshed with his wither area and one pic of a side view.
The confo pic you have could be deceiving and of course all Horses can break the normal rule, but I find it hard to believe a Full-QH bar Saddle fits a 3 year old properly, no offense meant, only my opinion of over 500 saddle fits
I got some pictures. I hope they work. It was starting to get dark and Jinxx didn't want to stand still, kept twisting and turning, because he wanted to go eat.
Not cinched.
Lightly cinched.
(this one came out blurred a bit. Hope it works for now. I can a new one tomorrow.)
The Saddle sits pretty level, from what I can see the bars look like the angle is pretty good.
It might be a touch wide, but I am not sure that going one size smaller would be a huge benefit.
I might suggest if you are not already using one, a Saddle Pad with the wither relief (some call them wither cut-out pads) this would give better wither clearance under the pommel.
He is very wide for a 3 year old, he will probably need an X-Wide QH Tree in a few years
The guy I bought him from had his full brother on site and at the time he was also a 3 year old and he too was pretty muscular. Can't say I have ever heard of a cut-out pad or saddle pad before, which is kinda surprising since I'm always looking at tack lol. I'm using a 7/8 inch 5 star pad right now.
When he's saddled with the pad and everything it has plenty of clearance under the pommel. is the cut out in the wither area the wither relief you're talking about? I have a 5 star like this one 5 Star Pads Supreme Roper 32" x 32"
So for now it sounds like the best thing to do is just use this saddle and wait to get another one for him until he is pretty much done growing?
Just realized the link is showing the 1 1/8 inch pad. The one I have and use is a 7/8 inch pad.
