Question Saddle pad

I'm wanting to get a new saddle pad, and I'd prefer to get one of the cutout ones, where it is the shape of the saddle. However, last time I got one, it was WAY too big for my saddle, and it was the smallest one. How do I know if a cutout will correctly align with my saddle?

Measure your saddle, or buy them both at the same time.

They make shaped pads in all different sizes and shapes. Measure the pad that is too big, determine how many inches shorter, narrower, etc that it would need to be to fit. Look elsewhere and find the pad closest to those dimensions.

BTW, what size is your saddle? I've seen plenty of teeny English saddles with properly fitted shaped pads. It's doable, you just need to keep looking and know what size you need.

It's 17.5"

You can definitely find something to fit a 17.5" saddle. If you had a kid's saddle then it might be more difficult, but it would have to be a pretty good sized pad to be excessively large on a 17.5".

Another idea- ask around your area for pads you can try under your saddle. Find one that fits, buy an identical pad

You can take your saddle with you to the tack shop, then put it on a stand or horse form with the shaped pads they offer to see if any fit. You can also try ordering online from stores that offer free return shipping (like SmartPak)
