Saddle Pad Or Saddle?

Hi everyone, I have a problem. I bought my Crates saddle last year and I really love it. Recently I've noticed that my filly is getting a rub spot on her back. It's not sore by any means because I've checked. I honestly don't think its the saddle. I've been using an older saddle pad that I've cleaned many of times. I'm not sure if its just too short for her and possibly hard. My other saddle pads are extremely long and thick.

She has no withers at this point so it makes keeping the saddle from rolling a royal pain in the butt. The trainer said that the saddle fits her and he thinks the saddle pad is hard and too thick. He said to clean that area and see if it rubs again. He doesn't think I'm riding too far back and have good balance. The saddle is also in the proper position.

So any suggestions on saddle pads? Thin saddle pads? Haha I'm looking for a new saddle pad and am going to stop using the old one for now. Opinions are welcomed. I have some pictures that I took after she was unsaddled but this afternoon I'm going to take more pictures of the fitting. Thank you ahead of time.

This was just a wool blanket that was a little thicker than normal. I didn't use anything under it and rode her for three hours and didn't notice any rubbing.

The older saddle pad.

Where it's rubbing.

An older picture I found after riding with her still saddled.

In the spring and fall my horses will get what looks like a rub over thier kidneys but I think it's just the long hair being worn of from the motion of the horse. I have never had it rub all the hair off or cause any soring. That said, I like to use the best pads I can afford. I like the Diamond Wool pads or the neoprene type pads although they can be costly.

Thank you. I know its a fairly common rub I just don't want it rubbing a sore. Lol I'm all for paying money for good equipment. I will look for a diamond wool pad. I've been looking for new pads. I have a couple professional choice pads SMX. It is a good pad but it's very long on her and too thick.

Thank you again for replying.

Have you tried a felt or felt-lined pad? I really like them myself.

It may be just the angle of the Camera

In the 1st Pic with you on the Horse, the Saddle looks OK, in the last pic the Saddle seems a little far back.

How long are the Skirts?, in the last pic the Skirts look too long for the length of Horse you have.

Could be an optical illusion or could be winter hair get rubbed off, any soreness in that area?

Your horse is pretty, I also have a dun and am looking at purchasing a Crates. What type/model is your saddle? I am also wondering if the Crates Supreme trail saddle 2171wide will be too long for my horse, it is 26" in length. I have a wook Toklet pad since late last year and it has really made a difference, and I hear the 5 Stars are really good also.

Does your horse have a short back?? Mine does so it limits my saddle choices. Thanks

The first picture does look like a good fit.

Maybe try a breast plate? It could be moving back and forth just enough?

I don't know... the fit looks good to me.
