Saddle Shopping - Mini Rant... okay... maybe a medium sized rant.

So... I picked up a new mare last year and it turns out that not a single saddle on our farm comes close to fitting the both of us. The ones that fit me are too long for her and the ones that fit her have child sized seats.

I contacted the tack shop a while ago and they started looking into it for me. Nothing too fancy, just something serviceable and decently made.

Well, they found one, but they had to have it shipped in. I was told it would be there the end of the week. So I show up Friday and it's not there. I get a call several days later, turns out he didn't actually have the size and had to order it. Would probably take a week or so to arrive at the shop.

So I wait about two weeks, call and leave a message. No response. Wait another week, call and talk to someone who's not really sure and now I'm supposed to receive a call back on Monday. It's been almost 2 months now and I still don't have a saddle.

There aren't a lot of tack shops around here so I've been doing some online browsing. ebay, craigslist, local classifieds - found a lot of garbage, but a couple of possible prospects. Now, I know the second I order a saddle the other one will magically arrive.

I love the ladies at the shop and they're always willing to answer my questions, but they have rather lousy customer service. And I'd rather spend the money on a used Simco, Billy Cook, Circle Y or older name brand saddle than a nameless, semi-decent saddle from who-knows-where.

So that's about it. Summer is slowly ticking away and I'm hanging out in "no serious ride zone" with my new girl. Anyone else have a similar situation? How'd it work out?

I have had similar issues when I had a custom saddle made that turned out to be a nightmare. I am big on customer service and if you screw up once with me without making up for it, then I'm done. There are a lot of options online that allow you to order saddles on trial or return.

Let's see if this makes you feel better:

Bought my two horses September, broke my arm requiring surgery late September (thanks to the youngster). Snow came in October. Arm damage healed sufficiently to ride by December. Snow and ice and post-accident nerves kept winter riding on an infrequent basis on the not-youngster.

Spring came and saw weeks of no-progress on the youngster culminating in saddle fit that declared saddle Not Fitting. New saddle ordered Hurray! Will take five weeks Boo! Loan saddle arrives Hurray! Without girth Boo! Borrowed girth from saddle fitter hurray! Girth doesn't fit Boo! Saddle fitter promised to bring up girth that will fit... Next week.

But hey, it will all come together soon, and we'll be riding and laughing about the trials and tribulations that got us this far.
