    And I am currently riding in a 17" all purpose. I did have a stock saddle but it broke a few years ago and I have no idea what size it was. I've ridden in both western and stock saddles, but I just really love the western saddles.

    Haha, I'm glad you asked! For reference, I'm 5'3 with a small butt and ride in a 17" dressage that's a tad bit big, a 16.5" close contact, and 15" barrel saddle. Lots of people with 17" english saddles like more wiggle room western, but I was swimming in the 16" that I tried. Some people my size would feel cramped in a 15". Western saddles vary widely by make too. One 15 may fit perfectly, and the next may have you squeezed in too tightly. Since you're new to western I would at least sit in a few to see what you like. Around here it's impossible to find english saddles to try in tack stores, but almost every feed store has a few western saddles on consignment that you can try.

    I ride in a 17.5" English, and prefer a 15" Western.
