You can get a roll of hunter orange tape. Very cheap. I put lots of it in our horses manes and tails. It is flimsy, so no chance of it causing a problem if caught on something. You could even put some around their neck if you doubled it up a bit. IMO you cannot be too cautious in hunting season. It is the drunken few that give hunters a bad name.

My friend lost animals to hunters every year so he decidede to paint the word COW on the side of the cow, Horse on the side of the horses, Sheep on the side of the sheep. You get the idea. Well he made it right up to the last day of hunting season without loosing an animal. He was so happy having lunch that he had finally beat the hunters and then he went to the back of the barn and found his john DEER tractor shot to s***

Some of them seem to think that "big and brown" is good enough for "shoot now, identify later" hunting. I've actually been toying with the idea of temporarily cross-fencing the pasture to keep Aero up closer to the house, but the barn is at the back of the field and that would be kind of a pain. We do keep her in her bright halter, though, which I don't really like as I don't like leaving the halter on unless we are actively needing/using it, kwim?

It's a shame that the few idiots out there with guns have to give the rest of the hunting community a bad name. My dad and sister, plus more family and friends than I feel like trying to count this early in the morning all hunt. I choose not to hunt (I'm not much for the "cleaning/field dressing" part, when it still looks like a dead animal ) but I help with the butchering and eating . I know that all of the hunters I know personally would never shoot at something just because it moved in the woods and something was in season. We do have a problem with tresspassers on occasion, but if our bull is around he usually spooks them off pretty efficiently.

I really like Juniper's suggestion. The tape would be really visible, and would break easily if it needed to. I don't worry about anything much here. We just keep our guys in on opening day. The opener can sound like WW3, but after that all the tourists go home and it's pretty safe. Kind of odd hunting strategy, go out on the first day and never again, but whatever floats their boat.

We live across the road from a water shed/rich dude hunting paradise. During bird season its nothing to see 8-10 cars parked there. They all sit in their duck blinds, drink beer and blast away every time the reeds rattle
Fortunatly, I assume they are using bird shot, but when its deer season I worry about our girls non-stop. So far so good, but I feel your anxiety. I haven't done anything special to keep them from getting shot. I like the orange halter idea. I wear an orange vest when I ride too.
Can you paint some posts around your property with blaze orange?

I would try to fence off and area back from the woods for hunting season. We always kept the boys up in the lot, as our neighbor allowed hunting on his ground. Never had a problem. As for posting the property line last time I checked a bullet couldn't read. The signs are intended to keep people out but you never know if the hunter is aware of what is beyond his line of vision.

I found the livestock paint in bright orange. Its less than $7 per can, so I think I'll go with that. Here's what I found: Show Stopper Pig Supplies

There's also marker and crayon versions, but I think the spray can will be easiest.

We'll see how long it stays on - here's to hoping I don't have orange horses for months!

That'll work!! Glad you found something that will work for you. I always worry come deer season too and move them in closer.

Deer camp for so many is a party. Then as mentioned above you have a bunch of drunks at dawn. To many take 'sound shots' and then go see what they hit. I've gotten to where I won't even go ride in the woods in deer season unless there's enough of us to make plenty of noise.

You also have those in the stands that are sober but just aren't educated. They don't think of what could be beyond their target. Fortunately in a heavily wooded area, generally a tree will catch a stray before it makes it somewhere to hurt something. Idiots in the woods give the serious hunters a bad rap.

I'm really glad you're taking precautions and making your kids highly visible with the paint. I've seen to much in my 50 years on this planet involving idiots.. way to much.

You read my mind I'm not sure I would use it on a really light colored horse. Maybe do a patch test for 24 hours first to see how easy it comes off.
Let me know how it goes, I may give it a try too.

What a great idea. Although, I like the idea of you letting us know how long it sticks to the horse. You get to be the guinea pig LOL.
