Question Shopping for a helmet - need advice! :)

Ok so I've narrowed my search down to these two helmets:

IRH XR9:
IRH XR9 Helmet - ASTM/SEI Certified Helmets from SmartPak Equine

Charles Owen GR8:
Charles Owen GR8 Helmet - ASTM/SEI Certified Helmets from SmartPak Equine

Now the tack shops around here don't carry the IRH that I want, but they do carry the Charles Owen. I tried it on and found that it was a bit tight in the size 7 1/8" (when I had my hair tucked up under it) but the 7 1/4" seemed too wide on the sides (I think I have a really oval shaped head or something!)

Right now, I own this helmet, in a size 7. I can't put my hair up in it though, so I know I'll need one slightly bigger if I want to do that (which I do!)

IRH Olympian:
IRH Olympian Velvet Helmet - ASTM/SEI Certified Helmets from SmartPak Equine

Anyway, I want to try out the IRH XR9 but that means ordering it from online and then having to ship it back if it doesn't fit the way I want it to. Much more of a pain than just being able to try it on in the store! So I'm trying to get as close to the right size as possible. Does anyone have any experience with the above helmets and do any of them run the same or at least really similar?

I have the 3rd one (use for shows only). I like it, but it's not adjustable unfortunately (and its little too tight for me). If all of them fit you nicely I personally would go for CO one.

The reviews that are posted on Smartpak seem to imply that the helmet you are interested in runs slightly large.

^^ yeah that's what I was reading...so maybe the size 7 would work for me, if I fit the size 7 withOUT my hair tucked up and I want to be able to tuck it up in the new one? :)

I have the charles owen jr8, I love it. I bought it feeling a little small because it was the only one in the store and I didn't want to order it, I know I'm bad with safety. But the padding on the inside kinda squished down after I wore it for a week haha. I'm no expert on safety or anything, but I think it looks purdy too. ;)

FD, the girl at the tack shop did tell me to order the CO's a little small because they do mold to fit your head after awhile so they'll be too large if you order them feeling perfectly at first!

And I called SmartPak about the IRH, they said it's not so much that it runs BIG but it runs WIDE...hmmm not sure about that. But they said they'd do free shipping for me if I want to try it out, I just have to pay return shipping if I don't end up wanting it. I think I'm going to go with the 7 that I wear in my IRH Olympian and then tuck my hair up in the XR9 to see how it fits. If it doesn't, then I have the GR8 on order to try out too. So one way or another I'm getting a new one (FINALLY, haven't bought a new helmet in about 4 years and this one's getting kinda stinky haha) ;)

Why do you want to put your hair up into the helmet anyways? You don't do Hunters. Also, if you tuck your hair up into the helmet, you void the warranty of the helmet, and etc, etc.

Why don't you just get a helmet that fits your noggin' perfectly with your hair down, and neatly put it back in a hair bun thinggy?

Since you event, why don't you invest in a skull cap?

I always tuck my hair under all the time, even if it's not a show. I have the CO, as my show helmet, and I love it! It really will form to your head once you sweat in it a little bit.

I don't have any experience with IRH, except that they're a cheaper version of GPA. I plan on buying one soon as a schooling helmet, so hopefully I'll like it...

Just because people wear their hair in their helmets, still doesn't make it correct or safe.

I love love love my Charles Owen. I just got a new one, I had my other one for 5 years. But you should go with the one that fits your head the best.
