shortening leather boots? feedback

I have a pair of ariat field boots id like to shorten as they are around an 1" to 1.25" too long. Luckily the leather is soft so when I ride ut doesnt bother too much, but they look sort of odd so id like to bring them to a leather/shoe repair place. Before I do that though id like to get some feedback from any if you who shortened tall boots. Did it end up paying off/being succesful? Or did you regret it and the zipper became more sensitive? Im a little worried the job might be poorly done and my boots would have been better off being left alone. I knew a really good place id have trusted conpletely, but they closed down due to a fire. :(
