You could always look for a used one. Or purchase a cheaper brand for around $70, try it to see if it makes a difference. If so, sell it, get the recommended one. Even if you sold it used for $35 (half off) its like a $35 trial fee to try it out vs a $170 investment.

Thanks for the advice! That's what I've been thinking. I'm going to a saddlery now that has some used items, and I heard that they also have a cheaper brand versus the $170 girth... while it is so gorgeous with the multi-tone leather, I have a less expensive option that I'm sure will help me out just as much. So, I'm planning on picking it up today.
