Side reins?

Is there any way to make a pair of side reins? I've seen people use rope but I'm not thinking that's exactly a good idea...but I don't want to spend very much if any money if I don't have to. =)

I just want to use them when I lunge Lacey to hopefully help her get a little more balanced on the lunge line.
