Slobber straps?

What are slobber straps used for?
Does it give more weight to the reins for a bigger release?

(Sorry for my question being so short.)

Slobber straps are meant to be used with rope reins and yes, do aid in a quicker release, the point being that the added weight not only causes the rein to drop faster, but also rise slower, therefore we ask slower (not delayed, just gentle at first and then increasing in pressure, as the horse can feel the rise of the slobber strap hinge movement before the rein even pulls directly on the bit) and rewards quicker by weighting down the rein. It's not an aid for the horse, but for us. It helps us make our point clearer.

It also keeps your nice reins out of the nasty water trough! If you use a macate set up then you can also adjust the lenght of your reins for the type of work your doing.
