So winter is coming. . .

Winter is coming & ill be getting my horse at my house soon .
Im a first time horse owner & I was wondering if I would need a sheet or a blanket to put on him after I work him. I live in Texas, it doesnt get as cold as some other places are, but the past few years its been pretty darn cold.
Im not planning on running him like crazy or anything, I was thinking just like twenty or thirty minutes a day just refreshing. I've seen a couple of horses that just lay around the hay bale all winter, get all fattened up, &then are expected to know how to be a perfect riding horse again in the spring.
He's going to be my trail horse but I don't want him lazy. Maybe just like walk for a little bit maybe trot some. I don't want him to get a chill & get sick.
I mean this might be a stupid question but I want to take whatever precautions needed.

Are you planning on clipping him or blanketing him all winter? If not then I suggest getting a cooler to put on ihm after exercise. Use this when he is sweaty and leave it on until he is dry. Don't leave it on all the time, just until he is cooled out and dry then take it off and he should be fine.

If you're planning on blanketing him for the whole winter I guess the type of blanket to get him all depends on how cold it will get, how old he is, how much coat he grows, things like that.

Even if you plan on blanketing for the winter i'd still get a cooler so you don't have to blanket him wet/sweaty.

Personally I don't blanket. I'm in Ohio and it gets pretty cold, I let my horses coat grow and have a cooler to put on if he gets sweaty. Once he's dry I crush him out to fluff up his hair and then back outside he goes.

Hope this helps.

coolers, excersize, sheets, winter
