So I swapped my stock saddle that doesnt fit my new qh for a western that seems to. I know nothing of western saddles but it didnt look to bad a fit when we tried it out and it was comfy to me. So I got a few pictures, any opinions?
I will be asking my instructor on sunday her opinion too and she will show me how to do the girth up etc.
The only way to truly tell if a western saddle fits is to put it on the horse w/o a pad - do not cinch up - & run your hand from the front of the tree (keep in mind the tree is HIGH - like where that front concho is - feeling under the skirts will tell you nothing). Run your hand from the front to the back - you should have even contact the whole length - not tight, then loose, then tight or any other combination - steady, even contact is perfect. If you have tightness by that front concho, too tight there. If gaps along the spine/back, then it is bridging - NOT good. Too tight at back will put pressure there too.
I hope that helps!
Beyond that, you might want to let your stirrups out a hole or two. They are really too short for actual "western" riding, plus a bit of a longer stirrup will allow you to sort of stretch your leg down and get it back under you like it should be...and get that heel down .
