Tack Cleaning

Hey guys! I just got a box full of horse stuff, including two western bridles and two western breast collars, which is great, but they are REALLY dirty. I've heard a lot about using Murphy Oil Soap to clean horse tack, and was wondering if any of you guys use it. If ya do, do you dilute it or use it full strength?

I always thought it's used on wood rather than leather. I use products designed for leather. I'm curious to hear responses as well.

I use Murphys for my first leather cleaning. In a small bucket I put a 1/4 btl Murphys and fill it up with warm water. A soft rag and get to work. Once they are all dried, I like a conditioner like horsemans one step. Softens, conditions and cleans in one swipe.

My dad liked to experiment with different cleaners, so I have 25+ different types. My favorite is the Horseman's One Step cream.

At the barn I ride at, my trainer uses Murphy's and a bunch of water. It's like... one capful to a few cups. It works well! As far as conditioning goes, I use oil or leather new.. both work like a charm to soften and preserve! Also, if you want to waterproof your leather (to an extent) you can try mink oil! I love that stuff 8)

I'm also going to cast a vote for Horseman's One Step. It's easy to apply & does an amazing job of cleaning up the leather & making it nice & soft.

I've used Murphy's in the past. I didn't have any the last time I was at the tack shop and just bought some Leather New. It works just as well, imo.

Thanks for all the info guys! I think I'll pick up some Horseman's Onestep next time I'm at the tackshop since it seems so popular.
