I wear paddock boots with half chaps in the spring, summer and fall and fleece lined tall boots in the winter. Full chaps are great except when it comes to mounting. Difficult to get your foot up into the stirrup.

    Yearling
When I worked at a hunter jumper barn I wore a pair of blundstone boots with just regular wrangler jeans. When it was time to ride I would throw on a pair of half chaps and ride my 3 or how ever many horses for the day and then when done take them off and back to my daily farm chores. They were super comfortable to. However I see the price has gone through the roof on them as well. I think they were like 99.00 when I got them about 6 years ago or so.

My instructor also said they need to be zip. Black is preferable.

Your instructor is doing what mine did when I started acquiring horse stuff- taking a personal preference of hers and telling you that it's "required" Mine also told me that I HAD to get zip ups, so I did. Personally, I find the velcro kind to be irritating and I wouldn't ever buy them, but there's no practical reason that they NEED to have zippers.

As far as color goes, that is also a personal preference. Black is always considered in fashion in the dressage world, but I've always had brown half chaps and paddock boots. The only reason why you would need to have black ones is if you are planning on showing in them. However, if you plan on doing any real showing then I would suggest you get a pair of tall boots at that time. If I recall correctly I even did my first dressage schooling show in my brown chaps and boots because I had not yet found a pair of boots that fit me. Buying what your trainer tells you to may keep the peace, but if you're really lusting over a pair of brown half chaps then there's no practical reason (other than perhaps showing) that they need to be a certain color or style.

Also, for what it's worth, these are the men's version of the boots that I have:
Paddock Boots Heritage III Zip - Ariat

I love them, and they are super comfortable. I've had the same pair for the past four years or so, and they're just starting to develop cracks. My last pair lasted about the same amount of time, usually with riding at least one horse 5 days/week. Sometimes less, often more.

My half chaps are about 10 years old, so they don't manufacture ones exactly like them anymore. However, these look to be a comparable model:

Half Chaps All Around Chap III - Ariat

Like I've said, they've lasted about 10 years for me. The elastic strap that goes under the foot has finally started to fail (a few of the bands have popped, but I guess the rest is on its way out) so I think I'll be investing in a new pair soon. Can't complain about the comfort, and they get the job done! There are plenty of other options out there, but I'd get something nice if you're planning on sticking with riding for any length of time. I bought a cheap pair of really thin stretchy washable half chaps for throwing over my jeans when going out for a trail ride or something, and they showed a LOT of wear for only being used for those occasions and a couple of "real" rides. The zipper came off of one of them the first time I put it in the washer after a year or two and only 20 rides or so.
