I am not an eventer, but I was raised up around Standardbreds, and my Grandparents always would tape the boots at the races...although not normally at home.
My grandparents would use black electrical tape. It is sticky enough to stick to the boot while you use it (we used to do twice around) but it wouldnt leave a sticky residue on the boot.
You can get electrical tape in a variety of colours as well, so that you could still have the colours that you ride in.
(We also always use baby powder on the inside of the boot...and I beleive it was to help prevent rubs on the legs.)
If I use tape, I use Electrical Tape. I grew up in Pony Club using Electrical Tape. It wasn't until I moved here when I started to hear about duct tape being used.
I find duct tape difficult to get off, where electrical tape isn't, and electrical tape doesn't leave residue and gunk behind on my boots.
Electrical tape for race horses. Make sure you don't rip any tape off when you've finished wrapping it around because it can pull and cause uneven tension in boots and wraps.

When you have to take care of a few horses at the track by yourself the whole night....tidy really doesnt matter that much.
Cutting it also makes it harder to pull off after.
