Thorowgood saddle

Right guys,

I researched loads on saddles and eventually decided that a thorowgood would be best for my unbacked four year old as I could change gullets etc.

Anyway, bought one secondhand off ebay and it came today. Have now found out that although it is the T6 thorowgood saddle, its the older version which doesnt have interchangeable gullets so it only has fish.

Does anyone know if saddlers will be able to alter it as I think he needs it wide not med/wide and if so rough price?

If not, its going to have to be trying to sell it and getting something else, in which case does everyone agree that a thorowgood gp WITH interchangeable gullets is best or not?

Please help :)

Also, Iv looked at loads of sites and the sticky on here about saddle fitting and Im still a bit confused as to where the tree should come too by the withers if you get me? Like how do I tell if its too narrow or wide?
Plus he doesnt have large withers so the pommel seems to be very high(more than 3 fingers clearance), is this bad?

Sarah

PS. Im in UK so no $ please

Posted a pic of him so you can see his conformation roughly

You're lucky your in the UK. We can't get the T6 over here. It looks so much nicer than the T4. I would just re-sell the T6. If the gullet is too wide, you could use a saddle pad and the fish to offset it, but if it's too narrow, there's nothing you can do.

I just got a T4 with the interchangeable gullets and have already switched mine out to a wider one. I like the option to change it simply because horses muscle up with training and being able to widen the gullet gives me piece of mind that the saddle isn't pinching him.

At first glance, your guy looks like a high wither model candidate, but take either a piece of heavy wire or a flexicurve (you can find it in any art supply store that sells drafting tools) and measure your horse's shape 3"s behind his shoulder blades. The Thorowgood website has a good how-to link on measuring. It will tell you which saddle you'll need.

Myboypuck - You can't get the T6 in US? I'm in Canada and bought the T6 dressage in April.

SarahRicoh - I would have to agree with MBP, too narrow is no good, as it will cause pain issues as you ride. Can you resell this saddle and find a T6 with the changeable gullet? If you really love the one you've got, contact Thorowgood and see if they have any fitters they can recommend to change it to a wide. Where you're in the UK this might not be too complictated.

Its weird you say he looks high withers as this is the main problem.

My saddle was sold as the normal gp yet there is like a 5 finger gap between his withers and pommel so I was thinking maybe its high wither.. Therefore, I really dont think he needs a high wither one. He looks like he's got withers in that photo but he doesnt actually seem to.
Do you think the pommel is so high because its too narrow? Yet if it was wider I feel it would be too wide :S (its med/wide).

Il get some pics so you can tell me your opinions

I'm finding with Thorowgood saddles in general, there is significant wither clearance. Mine is the high wither model, but it's much more clearance than any horse needs. They kind of overdid it in my opinion. I just try to ignore the massive wither clearance and judge the fit by the part that touches his body. The newer changeable gullet saddles are much bulkier than some of the older models. I do like the more forward flap they put on the AP/GP ones. Great for jumping.

reachthestars, the only place I can find who sells Thorowgoods in the USA is Dover Saddlery and they don't carry the T6. I thought about ordering one from the UK, but my T4 serves it's purpose, so it's not a big deal. Where did you get yours?
