Tipperary Sportage 8500 Series helmet?

I currently have an older Troxel helmet that I got used. It's in good shape, but I feel like it just kind of perches on the top of my head. It's not that it feels unsafe, it just isn't entirely...comfortable. So, I'm looking around at other helmets.

The trainer at our barn has a Tipperary helmet that she loves and I really like the looks of it. It seems more secure on the head and like it provides more protection. Especially since coming off that mare last month and hitting the back of my head on the ground, I've been conscious about the fact that my helmet is sadly lacking in protection back there. I know how helmets are supposed to fit (YAY Girls Scout horse camp for teaching me about proper helmet fit!), and mine fits okay, but not great.

So, anyone else have the Tipperary Sportage? I found them on eBay for a really decent price ($60 including shipping), so I'm thinking about getting one next paycheck. Tipperary Sportage 8500 Series Riding Helmet CARBONGREY | eBay

Due to surgery back in January, I've had to wear a helmet. After looking at a lot of different ones, that is the one I chose (same color too). I've been wearing it for ~5 or 6 months now and it's very comfortable.

If I may ask, how much did you pay for yours? Does that $60 ($58.95, really, but I always round up) seem like a good deal?

Also, I just measured my head and I measure out at about 21 1/2", which is right on the line between medium and large. I should probably go for the large, yes, just to have some extra wiggle room (like if I want to wear a bandana or such?

After I had a couple falls in my Troxel, I put it away and bought a Tipperary Sportage. Well actually my trainer loves them and bought it for me. :) I LOVE it. It comes with various padding that velcros on, so you can fine tune it to adjust your head perfectly. In the winter I wear a headband thing under it and in the summer is has great ventilation. It is so much better than my Troxel. I feel like it really hugs my head instead of just perching on top like a mushroom.

The price is right and I would go with the larger size too.

I love Tipperaries. I am on my third now. They're super comfortable and well ventilated, and they offer more protection in back at the base of the skull. Because of that, my sidesaddle instructor recommends them for all sidesaddle riders (since the majority of sidesaddle falls involve falling backward).

Tipps are fantastic. Assuming you buy the correct size, they do not move...ever. None of that pony tail to keep it from slipping garbage.

I have a Tipperary also and I love it...very comfortable and well vented. The Troxel that I use to ride in now collects dust...no comparison.

I'm thinking of "donating" my Troxel to the BO's collection of helmets for dude string riders to wear once I get my Tipperary. Hehe!
