Trying to find a good bit...

    Hey everyone!

I have a mare that seems to not like most bits. She tosses her head, acts hyper, and gets moody when wearing the gentle Kimberwick she has. When ridden in a halter and lead rope, however, she is much calmer and happier. I am considering a bitless bridle for her. My friend said that bitless bridles are illegal in some shows (Rocky Mountain shows) so I'm wondering about Western pleasure.

I'm also considering a gentle bit with rubber in it, perhaps. But I'm willing to take suggestions, considering the bit isn't crazy expensive. Please include name.

The bit also must come in pony or small horse sized, since my horse is cob and has a very small mouth.

    Thanks for your help!

By the way, she is very responsive to anything in her mouth. She works prefectly in her halter/lead rope. Another thing is I don't jerk on her mouth or anything...

How long has it been since she has had her teeth floated? Before changing bits, I would first rule out the physical.

As for using a bitless for WP, I don't believe it's allowed. A WP horse over the age of 4 or 5 (I believe) is shown in a shanked bit. Below that age, a snaffle is permitted.

I'm not sure when her teeth were floated. I'll ask her previous owner (she's my new horse)

    Thanks for the info.

Gentle kimberwick? This sounds like an oxymoron to me. Anyway, I would first check teeth there are all sorts of bad that can creep up with a horses teeth, especially if they still have their wolf teeth.

Also if you are thinking of going more gentle with your bit, as it sounds like you are, I would go for something more of a plain D ring or eggbutt snaffle (loose rings can pinch lips unless you have bit guards). Or a Rubber D ring. They are pretty much always legal in any show ring and about as gentle as you can go. Many also allow hackamores (bitless) but I would read the rules for whatever you enter before competing with one. But for showing, I'd say the plain/rubber snaffles.

I agree, have your vet check her teeth no matter what her previous owners say. Ask your vet if she has wolf teeth. If she does, have them pulled out.

A couple of days after her teeth are floated, ride her again and check her comfort.

If she's still unahppy, then what kind of kimberwhick are you using? Single joint, ported, roller middle, uxter sides, smooth sides, etc. If it's an uxter kimberwhick, with the slots for your reins, which slot do you have the rein in?

Unrelated to the bit, is she sensitive to flies or gnats around her face? She may be reacting to the flies or gnats, and not necessarily the bit.

It also could be just a training issues. You may need to work through it.

All that said, I would definitely have her teeth checked ASAP. Then you can consider the rest of the possibilities.
