turnout sheet vs fly sheets

I am needing either a turnout sheet or fly sheet for my mare. She is a grey paint with pink skin and gets burnt terribly in the summer. I need something that is strong and durable but will also keep her from getting hot. Ohio has hot summers and she can't be stabled to keep her out of the sun.

I have looked at tons of sheets and I don't know whats better, I also don't want to pay more than $70 for one as she has ripped up every sheet I have put on her and rips off all fly masks.

If your girl is hard on sheets and such, you might consider a muzzle or something like a topical spray if you really don't want her messing with them.

A flysheet would be of lighter, more loosely woven fabric and I would guess not too "ponyproof." While they are cooler to a point, they are rather fragile.

Turnout sheets are a tighter weave, more durable and can be hotter because of it. Chances are, she won't tolerate this for long, either. I am not aware of white turnouts but if you choose to go the turnout sheet route, find the lightest colour you can to reflect sun.

Personal opinion but while out shoppping for your girl's new summer wardrobe, note that "breathable" does not necessarily translate to "cooler".

I am sorry I didnt mean to make the impression she rips them off with her mouth she rolls and scrapes till they are ripped up. I tried the stabling during the day and letting her out at night but she didnt have a companion with that routine and got to be much of a handful and doesnt like to be stalled and the place I will be keeping her wont have stabling access.

I saw some weatherbeeta sheets with the neck wraps will that bother or irritate a horse?

I have a TurtleNeck heavy-weight for one of the boys here and I love it! I would think that their fly sheets and turn-outs (do they make a light sheet?) are equally impressive. They seem to fit broad -shouldered horses quite well, too: no rubs this year..yay!

Can't attest to their durability as my "kids" are relatively kind to their clothes : )

Haha, yes they do. I also have the mud turtle (it's like a summer sheet, really light but waterproof) and the rain sheet as well, which is made for a survivalist, or at least a horse really hard on its blankets. (i joked to my husband that if we become poor due to my excessive blanket buying, we could live under it as a tent when it rains)

The fly sheet is not like other ones I've seen. The material is not silky or easily ripped. It hangs away from the horse's body, and is stiffer. It's made of almost a thinner fishing line material. It also has UV protection.

I should become a rep for turtleneck. I'm really happy with them, the only thing I'm not crazy about is that there are no fun colors.

How many seasons have you guys gotten to last out of these sheets? I would hate to get this and it only lasts for one season. As my fiance doesnt even see the point in spending any money in one but I have to have UV protection or I have a blistered up horse from getting sunburned.


And what do you recomend for fly masks? I need one that goes past the nostrils almost to the mouth. I have yet to find one that is long enough or one that lasts longer than 2 months.



Maybe I need to look into just getting her used to stabling and find a place to stable her.
