The other day I was entering the arena while mounted on my horse. I ducked to get under the metal bar that frames the doorway but did not duck enough and whacked my head on the bar. I was wearing my helmet so it did not really hurt. I know if you fall and hit your head you are supposed to replace your helmet... but what if you stupidly bang your head on a metal pole? Would the impact be enough to damage my helmet or should I not worry about it.
If there aren't cracks in the shell (outer part) you're fine! If the shell is cracked, it should be replaced...but use common sense...I was tossed by a horse, landed on the upper part of my head, so the visor and helmet were pretty much toast. The shell had cracked big time, and the visor was crunched, so I got a new helmet (and have been vigilant about wearing one since!)
I was thrown a second time (different horse, same stupid rider!) and hit my head at the back. This time the helmet held, but there was a small puncture where a piece of gravel had pierced the shell. Since it was right in an area I couldn't hit again if I tried, and the impact hadn't damaged the shell, I am still using that helmet.
Glad I could clear this up for you! LOL
Thats good cause it should have a whole year of life left in it and if I am having to retire it early I want a better story than I was stupid and smacked my head.
Tell them you busted it while breakin broncs in Texas
