Looking to buy this used Rodrigo Pessoa 17" Gen-X saddle, approximately 15 years old. How much is a reasonable price for this saddle? Pictures included. Thank you
(PS_ posted this originally in the tack review section.. then realized this is probably the correct category!)
That saddle doesn't look as if it's been cared for properly, with all the cracks in the leather. It looks a heck of a lot older than 15. I have a 40 y/o Stubben that's in much better shape.
I'd pass on it, honestly. Once the leather's cracked like that, there's no bringing it back.
Even just as as schooling saddle? I'm not planning on showing in it of course, but i figured that even though it is not aesthetically perfect, i would still function the way it should an be comfortable for daily riding?
Well I just paid $1,600 for a 15-year-old Tad Coffin (brand new they are $6,000) that is in excellent condition. The leather and stitching is perfect. I got a steal of a deal on it.
For the saddle in question, I would certainly pay way less than $1,000 for it, especially when I think a brand new Pessoa will run you around $2,500 (if I remember correctly). That leather is in dire need of some TLC. I'd see if you can find a better one.
That's wear and tear, and poor leather care. Those billets will need to be replaced sooner rather than later. Honestly, that saddle is a big mess. You really need to pass on it, unless you're planning to put a lot of money into it.
It appears the stitching was done around the edges of the leather as a way to secure it from unravelling. I usually back stitch because that's how I was taught but nothing wrong with how this was done.
