Used Saddle Shopping Questions

I am in the very very early stages of looking into getting a new saddle. Or more accurately, a new used saddle saying my budget is fairly low. My current dressage saddle doesn't fit me and I have a good reason to believe it doesn't fit Gypsy anymore. So, I was going to sell it, but it isn't worth much because it is a cheap, low quality saddle to begin with.

Anyways I have a few questions about what brands to look for, and what to look for in general. I am looking to get another dressage saddle. Synthetic or leather are both Ok, however I don't like the look of some of the cheaper synthetic saddles (But I don't mind most of the Wintec saddles). What brands are best to look at for used saddles? Essentially I want to know what ones are most likely to hold up longer, and what ones will give me the most 'value' for my money in general. Also, I am short, barely 5' (28" inseam pants are a little long on me) and am 155 lbs so finding a saddle to find me will be interesting. Are there any brands/styles that will work best for somebody with short legs? How much do you think I should budget to find a relatively inexpensive used saddle that is fairly good quality? It doesn't need to be anything fancy, but I don't want it to fall apart either if that makes sense.

Any other advice is appreciated. Essentially I am trying to figure out how much I need to save up to get myself a new saddle. So from that I can estimate how long I have to go without a dressage saddle (I have a western saddle, but I MUCH prefer to ride in an english saddle). I am a broke college student and my parents can't contribute much to a new saddle right now (maybe in a few months), but I also know that I can't keep using my current saddle with they way it fits both me and Gypsy.

Anybody? Any advice is appreciated.

By the way, I don't show or anything, I just prefer riding in a dressage saddle versus other english saddles or western saddles... So I'm not looking for super fancy/expensive, more just functional if that makes sense.

Have you checked out local consignment tack stores? I think that would be your best bet. If you find something on craigslist or similar too, make sure you're able to try it on your horse/go for a ride to see how it fits.
In my area, $350 can get you a decent used saddle.
Also, have you considered getting an all-purpose saddle with straight flaps? It will probably fit you better than a typical dressage.
Happy searching!

I only know of one local tack store that sells used english saddles. I checked online and I don't think they had a single one under $500, most were in the $1000 range.

Can you give an example of an AP saddle like you are talking about? I don't know much about AP saddles. All I know is that when I have ridden in a different english saddle (I believe it was a close contact saddle) I was never able to find my balance, I would fall forward when the horse stopped unexpectedly etc. But I will consider AP saddles if I can't find a dressage saddle that will work for me.

Try tacktrader.com

I am not really looking for where to look (although that is appreciated too) but what to look for.

I have looked at tacktrader, Olson's (the local tack shop), and craigslist. I haven't seen anything decent in my price range but I haven't been looking long and I don't even have the money saved up yet.

Sorry, I guess I didn't read much of the post before responding! Woops. When I first started riding the first one I rode in was a Wintec A/P. I know those run pretty cheap ($350ish? I think?)

The all purpose saddle allows you to do a little bit of everything- has a bit of a longer flap for dressage type stuff and a medium deep seat, yet still kind of a forward flap.

Look on Dover, they have them for $349.

What is the quality of the cheaper wintec ap saddles like? I thought I heard they were fairly low quality with cheaper materials? I will look into them but I would still prefer a dressage saddle.

They are your average synthetic saddle- they last for quite a while I have heard though. I have never owned one, but its what I hear. Dressage saddles do tend to run a bit pricey, as you know. I don't think I have ever come across a used dressage saddle (in decent quality) for under $400.

I love the wintec saddles. They fit most horses so you wouldn't be gambling that much if you couldn't put it on your horse. Just make sure that it is in usable condition and its billets are safe. Many people forget the leather billets on a wintec and never clean them then they just rot off. Also I found my saddle by posting on the buliten board at tack shops and feed stores, people always have some thing to sell... hope this helped!
