Got a box of horse items yesterday and I'd like to find out more about this headstall and bit. I know the headstall is older because I've never seen any like it in tack stores. The bit I'm not sure about. It doesn't seem to have any signs of wear. I couldn't find any maker's mark or anything on either.
Any ideas how old they are?
Looks terrible on your horse but would look great on my black one. (laughing) My pally looked great in a fine split ear bridle and her head was much like your horse's head. If it is leather lined then it is a quality bridle. Years ago no one marked their bridles, just their saddles. My catalog from the '60's sold these. In 1963 your headstall with reins sold for $14.95 in Canada.
I agree. The bridle, while gorgeous in and of itself, totally overwhelmes your darling golden horse. I'd sell it and use the $ to get a cute one for your baby. The bridle almost looks like something a Knight's horse would wear.
I wasn't planning on using it on Chanti. Her saddle is medium oil so it'd look funny anyway. But we're definitely going to hang onto it and maybe use it for parades. Hubby has an older kinda beat up black saddle but I plan on finding a better black tack set for him. I just wondered about how old it is. I think it's neat. The saddle I use on Chanti is a Bona Allen and from the serial numbers it is from the early 40s and still the best saddle I've owned. Got it when I got my first horse when I was 13 They just don't make tack like they did back then
